About TOBIN
TOBIN is a flexible and comprehensive project management system for the publishing industry. It is designed to help editors and project managers plan, track, and control the editorial, design, and production processes involved in developing and producing multi-contributor reference books. TOBIN is also meant to be used as a communications and transmittal tool for all people involved in such projects-including authors (or potential authors), designers, and illustrators, as well as scholars, editors, and project managers.
The strength of TOBIN lies in its Web accessibility so that anyone at any location can view the same information about the project, without worrying about version control. Further, TOBIN organizes, manipulates, and presents editorial and scheduling information about an article or group of articles according to any type of search or sorting criteria that project managers, editors, or contributors might need-subject area, article lengths, due dates, etc, for example. This results in a flexible and powerful management system that gives editors and project managers full control over all aspects of producing a book.
The training and supervisory benefits that TOBIN offers are an added bonus. In outlining the entire development and pre-production process, TOBIN will help editors and scholars who are inexperienced in multi-contributor formats familiarize themselves with the processes involved in developing complex and extensive reference works. TOBIN's database, the core of TOBIN's management system, charts each step in all phases of book production, from conceptual development and editing to design, artwork, and proofing. This careful plotting of tasks will allow all participants in the process-project managers and editors, scholars, and even managing editors-to monitor their progress and keep their projects on tract.
The Demo Site
The best way for you to familiarize yourself with TOBIN is to experiment with it. If you would like access to the Tobin project demo, please contact us. Specify in the comments area that you would like access to the Tobin project demo.
This demonstration Web Site is a living example: it's built using one of the projects that we've managed with TOBIN. What you are looking at now is the project homepage. This contains a brief description of the project in the center text area, where this text currently is. The links to the left represent additional project information and guidelines that are important to all people involved in the project, along with a link to the TOBIN management system. And the text you are reading now would have been replaced with something like:
The Moschovitis Group of NYC is currently coordinating
a project entitled Encyclopedia of Oceanography and Marine Science. It is a straightforward A to Z
encyclopedia containing articles of different lengths covering a
broad range of material, including chemical oceanography; ecology;
economics; geology; marine life; organizations; parts of the
ocean; people; physical oceanography; places; and ships,
navigation, and instruments. It is intended to serve the needs of
the upper level high school, college undergraduate, and public
library market. The encyclopedia will contain approximately
850 articles.
This general introduction gives potential contributors, editors, designers, and other interested individuals a broad overview. And the link at the bottom left leads you directly into the TOBIN management system.
